Packing the Kitchen and Laundry Room Without the Spills
Most laundry detergents and cleaning chemicals simply cannot travel on a moving truck at all — they’re among the most common items Allied has to turn away at the door, which is why sorting the laundry room early saves a headache later. Between fragile china, heavy small appliances, spillable pantry goods, and restricted chemicals, the kitchen and laundry room combine more competing packing challenges than almost any other part of the home.
What Can’t Ship: Detergents and Chemicals
Check Allied’s list of restricted items before boxing up a single cleaning product — most laundry and kitchen chemicals fall into that category, and finding out on moving day wastes both time and box space.
Pots, Pans, and Bakeware
Pack these in medium-sized boxes, nesting pieces inside each other where the shapes allow, and separate each layer with padding so metal edges don’t scratch against one another.
Cups, Mugs, and Glassware
Wrap each handle for protection, then pack cups and mugs upside down with handles all facing the same direction. Top the box off with crushed paper rather than leaving empty space at the top.
China and Everyday Glassware
Wrap every piece individually in clean paper, cushion generously, and label the box “FRAGILE – THIS SIDE UP.” This applies to good china and everyday dishware alike — a cracked plate is still a cracked plate.
Flatware and Silverware Sets
Wrap silverware individually to prevent tarnishing, and use a towel to line and protect any silver chest. Anything with meaningful resale or sentimental value over a set threshold belongs on the High-Value Inventory list, covered under the Transit Protection Plan.
Small Appliances and Steam Irons
Wrap cords carefully so they don’t scratch appliance surfaces, and secure each appliance inside a cushioned box. Steam irons need their water tank drained first, then a secure wrap and a spot at the base of a padded carton rather than on top of heavier items.
Delicate and Specialty Items
- Figurines and keepsakes: wrap in tissue, then soft paper, and pad with towels or blankets
- Mirrors, wall art, and photos: wrap individually and stand on edge inside cartons, keeping paper away from any oil-painted surface
- Cookbooks: pack similar sizes together, flat or spine-down, with any special volumes wrapped on their own
Food Items
Consume or discard perishables before moving day. Canned and boxed goods travel fine in small cartons — just seal any already-opened packages and wrap glass jars individually to prevent spills reaching other boxes.
Timing the Packing to Avoid a Last-Minute Scramble
Start with seasonal serveware, specialty cookware, table linens, and appliances used only occasionally. Work toward everyday dishes as moving day gets closer, and in the final week, switch to disposable plates and utensils — it keeps the kitchen usable without forcing a mad dash to repack the last few items.
