Moving Timeline

How Many Weeks Before a Move Should You Start Planning

Eight weeks. That’s the window Allied Bulgaria recommends before any relocation to, from, or within Bulgaria, whether the destination is a flat in central Sofia or a new address on the other side of one of our Allied International network’s 130+ countries. Skip the early planning and the same job gets harder, more expensive, and a lot more stressful in the final days. Below is the week-by-week countdown our Personal Allied Relocation Consultants walk clients through, built from thousands of moves handled across Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, and beyond.

Two Months Out: Setting the Foundation

Eight weeks before load day is when the shape of the move gets decided. Call your consultant to lock in a moving date and confirm whether storage or international shipping needs to be arranged alongside the move itself.

This is also the point to clear out the spaces everyone forgets: attics, garden sheds, basement storage. Start working through frozen food and cleaning supplies that won’t travel well, and begin researching the destination neighborhood — schools, transit routes, and healthcare providers, whether that’s a district within Sofia or a completely new city.

Six Weeks Out: Paperwork and Inventory

If an employer is footing part of the bill, get written confirmation of exactly which costs are covered before committing to anything. A quick check with an accountant can also flag tax-deductible expenses tied to the relocation.

This is the natural point to start an honest household inventory — keep, donate, sell — particularly for anything untouched in the last twelve months. Decluttering here has a direct effect on the final cost of the move. Build a running list of every account and contact that needs a new address: banks, employers, subscriptions, medical providers, government offices. Pull together medical, dental, school, and legal records now, and finalize any storage arrangements with the consultant.

Four Weeks Out: Locking In Logistics

Submit the official change-of-address paperwork. Utilities at both properties need attention now — set up the new connections, but keep electricity and phone active at the old address right through moving day itself.

Confirm continued coverage with home, auto, and medical insurers. Anyone traveling with pets or plants should start those arrangements immediately: not every carrier can transport live cargo, and Bulgarian and destination-country import rules both need checking well in advance.

Three Weeks Out: Travel and Finances

Book any hotels, flights, or ferries the move requires, and avoid stacking travel and load-out on the same day — delays happen. Visit the bank to transfer or close accounts, and gather financial and legal paperwork into one secure folder.

Two Weeks Out: Vehicle and Building Logistics

Get the car serviced and inspected, adjusting for whatever climate the destination throws at it. If the building has an elevator, confirm reservation requirements with the property manager. This is also the moment to reconfirm every detail with the assigned Allied consultant: timing, services, and documentation for cross-border moves.

One Week Out: Closing Loose Ends

Settle outstanding bills, collect dry cleaning, return anything borrowed, and empty the safety deposit box. If pets are traveling, get vaccination records and travel documents finalized at the vet. Drain fuel from lawnmowers, generators, or anything else with an engine.

Print directions to the new address for the moving crew, along with a list of emergency contacts.

The Last Couple of Days Before Load Day

Defrost and clean the refrigerator and freezer, propping doors open to avoid mildew. Major appliances need disconnecting and prepping — the Allied team can coordinate third-party service for this if needed.

Pack a personal essentials box separately from the main shipment: whatever gets a family through the first night in the new home.

What Happens on Moving Day Itself

Stay available to answer questions and direct the crew. Take meter readings for gas, electricity, and water before leaving. Review the bill of lading and inventory carefully before signing anything, and keep every document afterward for potential insurance or expense claims.

Building a Plan Around Your Own Timeline

No two relocations run on the same clock — a move from Ruse looks different from one leaving Sofia for another country entirely. That’s exactly why every Allied Bulgaria client gets a Personal Allied Relocation Consultant rather than a generic checklist. For questions on estimates, valuation, or paperwork before the countdown even starts, the Frequently Asked Questions page covers the details this timeline doesn’t.
