Should I Move Food or Donate it?

If you’re moving to or from Bulgaria and staring at a well-stocked pantry or overflowing freezer, you might be wondering what to do with all that food. Should you bring it with you, or is it better to give it away?

In most cases, donating uneaten food before your move is the smarter (and easier) choice.

While canned goods and shelf-stable foods may seem like easy things to toss in a moving box, you might be paying more to transport them than they’re worth – especially during long-distance or international moving.

Heavy food items cost money to move. For example, a box full of cans adds weight to your shipment and takes up space. Breakable glass jars can crack or leak during transit, making a mess – especially in a hot moving truck. The exception? Lightweight, higher-value items like tea, spices, or specialty ingredients. These can be worth packing and bringing with you, especially if they’re hard to replace in your new location.

Perishables and anything already opened rarely survive a move in good condition, and the cost of packing, insuring, or refrigerating food in transit usually outweighs what it would cost to simply replace it after arrival. Canned goods and sealed dry staples are the exception — they travel fine and are worth keeping.

Food that’s still sealed, within date, and not tied to a specific dietary need is the easiest category to donate rather than pack. A pantry clear-out timed a week or two before moving day also means less to sort through the night before the truck arrives.

If you really want to bring some food with you—especially during a local relocation—be selective. Pack breakable items like jars or bottles with extra care. Never put frozen or perishable food on the moving truck, even in a cooler. If you’re bringing perishables, transport them in your own car where you can control the temperature and conditions.

Moving to and from Bulgaria is the perfect time to declutter your pantry and make a fresh start. While some items are worth taking with you, donating what you don’t need is often the better option. It saves space, money, and helps those in need.
