What to Keep, Store, or Sell Before Moving
Sofia’s panel-block apartments, known locally as panelki, average well under 70 square meters — which is exactly why deciding what stays, what goes into storage, and what gets sold matters more than almost any packing tip. Every box that doesn’t need to travel is money saved on the final moving bill, whether the destination is Plovdiv, Varna, or somewhere outside Bulgaria entirely.
Sell or Donate What’s Already Been Outgrown
The fastest way to shrink a move is to stop moving things nobody uses. Before packing a single box:
- List furniture, electronics, and clothing on OLX.bg, Bazar.bg, or local Facebook groups
- Organize a moving sale a week or two before the move date to clear out anything left over
- Donate usable but unwanted items to local charities rather than boxing them “just in case”
Store What Isn’t Ready to Go Yet
Not everything unused needs to be sold. Heirlooms, seasonal items, and furniture that doesn’t fit the new floor plan can still be worth keeping without needing to travel immediately:
- Family keepsakes and documents that deserve secure, climate-controlled storage rather than a damp basement
- Furniture earmarked for a future home, a second property, or a grown child’s first apartment
- Short- or long-term storage options across Bulgaria that can be added directly onto a moving contract
Keep Only What Earns Its Place in the New Home
For everything left, ask a single question: has this been used in the past year? If not, it’s rarely worth the cost of transporting it. Items that pass the test — daily kitchenware, clothing in regular rotation, furniture that fits the new layout — are the only things that should make the final packing list.
Handle This Before the Movers Arrive, Not After
Once boxes are unloaded in the new home, the motivation to sort disappears fast. Sorting and selling before moving day — not after — is what actually lowers cost and stress, rather than just rearranging clutter into a new address.
A garage or moving sale is one of the most effective ways to convert unwanted items into moving-day cash, and pairing that with a clear moving budget keeps the whole relocation on track.
