A shipment crossing an international border faces the same kind of scrutiny a traveler does at passport control — except instead of a passport, it’s carrying a full household’s worth of belongings, and the paperwork has to be exactly right before any of it can move. How the Process Actually Works

• That office coordinates directly with the customs broker on the ground

Contacting the local office as soon as arrival happens at the destination matters — delayed clearance can mean demurrage charges or storage fees that add up fast while a shipment waits at a port or airport.

What Can’t Be Shipped

Every destination maintains its own list of restricted or prohibited goods, and legal responsibility for what’s inside a shipment rests with the person moving, not the moving company. Items that commonly cause problems include:

• Flammable, corrosive, or otherwise hazardous materials
• Certain foods, alcohol, or pharmaceutical products
• Weapons, including replicas
• Undeclared cash or high-value items above local thresholds

An updated list of restrictions gets shared well before packing day, so nothing problematic ends up boxed by accident.

Staying Informed While the Shipment Is in Transit

Customs timing is one of the biggest variables in how long a move takes overall, which is why tracking matters here as much as anywhere else in the process.
