How to Protect Carpets when Moving

Moving day can be tough – not just on you, but on your home too. Between heavy boxes, muddy shoes, and bulky furniture, your carpets and hard floors can easily take a beating. If you’re planning a move to or from Bulgaria, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your floors clean and damage-free.

Here’s how to protect your carpets and flooring while getting everything safely out the door.

It might seem easier to slide a heavy box or push a table across the floor, but that’s a fast way to scuff hardwood or tear carpeting. When packing, avoid making boxes too heavy to lift. Encourage your movers to carry instead of scoot, and always use furniture sliders under large or heavy items to protect both wood and carpeted surfaces.

Some homeowners request that movers wear shoe covers, but those tend to get dirty fast – especially when movers are constantly going in and out. Instead, place a heavy-duty welcome mat just outside the door to catch dirt, gravel, and grit. Make sure the mat is secure so it won’t shift or become a tripping hazard while your movers are carrying items.

Moving to and from Bulgaria means dealing with unpredictable weather. Before the truck arrives, check the path from the street to your front door. If there’s mud or standing water, lay down plywood, cardboard, or other firm surfaces to create a safe, clean walkway. If it’s raining, try to position the truck as close to the entry as possible, and if you can, hang a tarp or tent between the truck and the door to protect from splashes.

To keep carpets clean – especially new ones – consider using self-adhesive plastic carpet film or floor runner paper, which are available online or at moving supply stores. Lay them down in entryways, hallways, and any walkways movers will use. For safety, avoid covering the entire room and skip the areas where furniture will sit to prevent slipping.

You can also cover the area where boxes will be stacked – especially if they’ve been sitting in storage or a garage and may have picked up dirt or moisture.

Even with the best preparation, accidents happen. Keep a spray-on carpet cleaner, rags, and paper towels handy to clean up any messes right away. The sooner you treat a spot, the less likely it’ll leave a permanent mark.

If your carpet or flooring does get damaged during the move, don’t wait to speak up. Point it out to your moving crew, take a photo, and keep a record in case you need to file a claim.
