How to Pack and Unpack Your Dishes

A perfectly organized stack of plates and cups with a spoon on top, ready to be transported

No room takes longer to pack than the kitchen – and nothing is more prone to damage than dishes. If you’re relocating to or from Bulgaria, packing kitchenware the right way will help ensure your plates, bowls, and glassware arrive in perfect condition.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to packing dishes like a pro.

You’ll need several small to medium boxes, plenty of padding, and a clean workspace. Use foam wrap, blank newsprint, bubble wrap, or disposable foam plates between dishes. Avoid using towels, sheets, or clothes – unpacking becomes a mess, and it slows you down later.

Make sure all dishes are clean and completely dry before packing.

Line the bottom of each box with a generous layer of crumpled paper, foam, or bubble wrap. This helps absorb shock if the box is dropped or bumped during transit.

Start with the largest items – dinner and serving plates. Wrap each plate in two to three layers of foam or paper. If using foam plates as spacers, you still need to wrap everything to prevent chipping.

Stack wrapped plates vertically (like records), not flat. Fill in gaps around the stack with padding to prevent movement.

Fill the inside of each cup or mug with crumpled paper, then wrap the outside completely. These smaller items can fit above or beside your plates in the same box if space allows – just be sure everything is well padded.

Wrap large serving bowls first, placing padding underneath and between each bowl. Stack smaller bowls – like cereal or soup bowls – inside the larger ones, with padding between each layer. Fill any empty space with crumpled paper or foam.

Boxes should be filled nearly to the top, with about 1/4 inch of space left. Add padding to the top so the box closes flat and nothing shifts. Give it a gentle shake – if you hear movement, add more padding. Seal with packing tape and label clearly (e.g. “Dinner Plates – Box 1 of 3”).

Before unpacking, plan your layout. Keep mugs near the coffee maker, plates near the dishwasher, and everyday items within easy reach. Unwrap all items before placing them in cabinets – you’ll get a better sense of what fits where.

Use one large box to collect all packing materials, and flatten boxes as you go. This keeps your workspace tidy and makes cleanup easier.

Packing dishes with towels or clothes might sound efficient, but it creates twice the work. You’ll end up folding laundry before you can organize your kitchen. Clean foam or paper means your dishes will only need a quick wipe – not a full wash.

Packing dishes takes time, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right supplies, enough boxes, and a solid plan, you can protect your kitchenware – and enjoy unpacking it later.
